Eltro Automation Mark II Tempophon Information Rate Changer

The instrument

The Tempophon is an analog playback device for independent pitch and tempo changes. It consists of a rotating head with four sound heads mounted in a circle at equal intervals and a direction and speed controller. The device is mounted between the two reels of a tape recorder and can thus externally control the passing tape, which is guided past the rotating head. Depending on the change in speed and direction of the rotating head, parts of the tape can be omitted or played back twice. Stanley Kubrick used the tempophone in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
