Q&A

Building a Hybrid Live Rig

What are the interests in building a hybrid live rig and how is it done? How does a musician’s studio equipment differ from its live setup? And what does one have to consider when transitioning from the studio to the stage?

In this Q&A, Drummer and ZHDK lecturer Arthur Hnatek will share some insights on how to build a hybrid live rig. By starting from the example of his own setup, installed for the concert with Tillman Ostendarp the same evening, we will discover how the interaction between acoustics and electronics offers unique creative possibilities and how these interactions can be set and explored. The Q&A being in collaboration with the smem, we will also consider the historical evolution of musical equipment, it’s advantages and difficulties, and the ways in which vintage hardware can be combined with modern tools.

This event is part of a collaboration between the smem, Swiss Museum and center for Electronic Music, and the ZHDK, Zürcher Hochschule Der Künste.

Arthur Hnatek (Na-tek), drummer/composer/electronica artist, is a 32 years old Swiss born, award winner, contemporary musician. In 2022, he was awarded with a "Swiss Music Price". These days, he releases and performs electronic music, exploring acoustic improvisations and functional experimental club track.

Mikael Dürrmeier is finishing a Master’s Degree in philosophy and musicology and works as a project and research manager at the smem, the Swiss Museum and center for Electronic Music in Fribourg (CH).
