Korg Prophecy SSP-1 Virtual Analog Synthesizer
The instrument
The Korg Prophecy is a monophonic synthesiser. It is one of the first commercial DSP synthesizers with physical-acoustic and analogue virtual sound modelling. The Prophecy uses Korg's Multi Oscillator Synthesis System (MOSS) with digital oscillators that can emulate synthesis techniques such as analogue synthesis, FM and physical modelling.
The development of the Prophecy was significantly influenced by the Korg OASYS project, which did not reach the market. The Prophecy was positioned as a more affordable alternative to the expensive Trinity.
Details
The Prophecy offers five synthesis methods comprising nine oscillator types: Analogue, variable phase modulation, brass, reed and plucked string models, noise with comb filtering, and three types of analogue models - sync, ring modulation and cross modulation, collectively referred to as ‘MOD’. Each oscillator is processed by a linked waveshaper to create distortion or resonance effects. This signal, together with the outputs of a sub-oscillator and a noise generator and feedback, is passed through two multimode filters and then to an amplifier.
Modulation is possible through six multi-stage envelopes and four low frequency oscillators (LFOs) with a choice of 30 types. The programmable effects include overdrive, wah-wah, distortion, chorus, flanger, panning, 2-band parametric EQ, delay and reverb. An arpeggiator covers one to four octaves and offers ten pattern options.
