Arp Instruments Pro / DGX Analog Synthesizer Model 2731
The instrument
The Pro Soloist/DGX is a monophonic analog synthesizer with presets based on the Pro Soloist, which it looks very similar to. The first series was the model 2720 and, like the Pro Soloist, it has 30 presets and aftertouch. In the smem collection are the model 2721, which is labeled Pro / DGX on the front and Pro Soloist / DGX on the label, and the model 2731. There are differences in the design. Early models are still in a wooden case, later ones in a steel case. Later models are in the orange+black look of later ARP synthesizers. The Pro / DGX was used by Tangerine Dream and Keane, among others.
Details
The Pro/DGX sounds slightly different to the Pro-Soloist. The presets are practically identical, but the Pro/DGX has implemented a new filter design. Both synthesizers refer to their only filter control (the filter cutoff) as Brilliance. The aftertouch can be flexibly assigned to several parameters (pitch bend, filter cutoff frequency, volume, vibrato, WOW (resonance with cutoff) and GROWL (depth of effect of the LFO on cutoff). The keyboard covers three octaves. In addition to the keyboard, there is a three-stage octave switch and several faders for volume, aftertouch intensity, filter cutoff and portamento speed. Aftertouch was realized with a double metal strip attached under the keyboard.
The preset sounds are: Bassoon, English Horn, Oboe, Clarinet, Flute, Tuba, Trombone, French Horn, Trumpet, Cello, Violin, Bass, Piano, Banjo, Fuzz, Guitar 1, Buzz Bassoon, Sax, Space Reed, Telstar, Song Whistle, Noze, Pulsar, Comic Wow, Mute Trumpet, Steel Guitar, Harpsichord, Space Bass, Steel Drum, Country Guitar, Fuzz Guitar 2. The presets were now accessed via digitally interlocked pushbuttons with LED display.
