The tefifon was invented by the German entrepreneur Karl Daniel. The first tefifon players and sound tapes for home use came on the market in the mid-1940s. The tefifon could not prevail against the vinyl record and magnetic tape. Production was discontinued in 1965.
The tefifon tape was a cassette with an endless plastic tape in which the sound signals were engraved in spiral grooves, similar to the record, and sampled by a pick-up system with a needle. There was room for up to four hours of music on one cassette. The tapes were mainly compilations of hits, dance music as well as operas and operettas.
