Boss PD1 Rocker Distortion Pedal for guitars was developed and released by Roland in 1979. 

With the PD-1, a new form of distortion pedal has been created. The conventional type of effect on/effect off has been extended to a stepless fade. This allows control over the strength of the effect. The effect range of the pedal travel can be determined in advance using a control, so that different effect widths can be achieved with the same pedal travel. The volume of the effect can be adjusted to the normal volume. The distortion sound can be changed with the "Tone" control. There is also a warp mode where distortion with much higher gain is generated. (Source: Boss catalogue 1980)
