The Alesis DM5 module is based on the previous model, but has new sounds. Unlike conventional drum computers, it does not have an integrated rhythm sequencer, but is a drum sound generator that can be triggered via MIDI or directly via drum pads or contact microphones.

The DM5 is 16-voice polyphonic. It has 12 input trigger sockets whose sensitivity can be adjusted. The trigger system includes a hi-hat footswitch mode for open, closed and closing sounds. The DM5 is equipped with 18-bit DACs and a 48 kHz sample rate and has over 550 sounds divided into eight categories. The 21 on-board kits can be modified or even completely overwritten.
