Akai U40 Riff-o-matic is a variable tempo/pitch phrase recorder. It has connections for keyboards, guitars, bass, amplifiers, mixers, CD players, etc. 

The Riff-O-Matic takes to let sample musical phrases and slow it down without changing its pitch. It has 2 record modes, the normal mode to record up to 13 seconds of audio, for extra-long phrases the Riff-O-Matic's x2 function provides 26 seconds of record time. It is possible to slow a riff down to half speed and still practice along at the original pitch or transpose over a +6 semitone range. The Note Grabber function lets isolate and loop each individual note. Other features include Line In and Out jacks, each with level control, a headphone jack, and an Instrument input. The U40 has a Fine Tune function that allows to return the sample to the instrument.
