The instrument

Jack Wernli from Ampex started development of the Model 600 series that was introduced in 1954. He is a magnetic tape recorder designed to meet the needs of both professional and non-professional users. The 600 used 7-inch reels. It was both portable and light weight at only 12.5 kg. At 30 to 15000Hz, 7-1/2 ips and 55 db signal to noise ratio, its recording / playback quality equaled that of the Model 400. (source: history of recording)
