The instrument

The SY-2 is Yamaha's second analog synthesizer after the SY-1 from 1973. It is also a single VCO synthesizer with preset sounds and basic synthesis functions. It was designed as an accessory for organs. The SY-2 was partially built into the Electone CSY-2 organ and synthesizer, with only 14 presets.

Details

The SY-2 has the same preset sounds as the SY-1: Clarinet, Flute, Bassoon, French Horn, Bass Clarient, English Horn, Trombone, Trumpet, Saxophone, Oboe, Pizz Violin, Guitar, Hawaiian Guitar, Pizz Bass, Sousaphone, Wah Guitar, Bow Violin, Piano, Harpsichord, Contrabass, Tuba, Bass Guitar, Pulsar, Growlpet, Reed, Funny, Trumute, Double. They cannot be combined, but can be modified with sliders. The synthesis controls have been extended. A resonant high-pass filter has been added to the low-pass resonance filter of the SY-1, and the VCA envelope control has been extended to full ADSR with decay and release sliders. As with the SY-1, there is also an attack/pitch bend effect, pulse width modulation, vibrato, portamento and keyboard transposition. A touch control function allows aftertouch controls to be sent from the keyboard to the VCO, VCA or VCF to create vibrato, wah-wah or volume effects. The SY-2 also offers foot control.
