The instrument

The Yamaha P50-m, introduced in 1995, is a compact, half-rack MIDI sound module designed to deliver high-quality piano sounds. Developed in Japan, this module is part of Yamaha's esteemed P-series and features 28 meticulously sampled piano voices, including acoustic grands, Rhodes, Wurlitzer, Clavinets and Yamaha's CP-80 and DX-7. Details

The Yamaha P50-m utilizes AWM2 (Advanced Wave Memory 2) synthesis technology, which employs high-quality digital samples to recreate the nuances of acoustic and electric pianos. It features 32-note polyphony, although this reduces to 16 notes when using layered voices. The sound module includes a digital reverb a digital chorus, eight different types of sensitivity curve to match different keyboard/playing styles, and a three-band graphic equalizer for detailed sound shaping. MIDI In/Out ports facilitate integration into various MIDI setups, and the unit's compact size (220 x 210 x 44 mm) and lightweight design (1.2 kg) make it easy to transport. The P50-m does not have traditional synthesizer filters or envelopes, focusing instead on delivering authentic piano sounds with minimal complexity. Its LED display and intuitive front-panel controls ensure ease of use.
