Synthesis 101

What is actually audio synthesis? How does a synthesizer work? In which regard is a synthesizer similar to other acoustic instruments?

In this workshop open to all, we will get familiar with some of the main acoustic parameters at play in audio synthesis. By drawing from daily or familiar experiences of sound phenomena, we will progressively understand what the core elements of a synthesizer are and the role they play in shaping distinctive tones. Step by step, we will learn how to combine these elements, which will allow us to play with the basic elements found in most synthesizers, past and present.

This workshop does not require any prior musical knowledge and is open to audiences of all ages.

Mikael Dürrmeier is finishing a Master’s Degree in philosophy and musicology and works as a project and research manager at the smem, the Swiss Museum and center for Electronic Music in Fribourg (CH).

Goal: learn how to manipulate these parameters in any basic synthesizer.
Target audience: general public, non-musicians or musicians who do not know how to use a synthesizer
Capacity : max. 10 people.
Duration : about 1h30
Language: English
