Roland RS-505 Analog Paraphonic Ensemble Synthesizer
The instrument
The RS-505 Paraphonic is an analogue keyboard with 49 keys, 3 sections for polyphonic sound generation and two keyboard zones, Upper and Lower. Its predecessors were the RS-101 and the RS-202.
Details
The bass section consists of a monophonic synthesiser with 3 sounds that can be switched on via a rocker switch, Contra Bass 16, Tuba 8 and Cello 8, and an adjustable AR envelope. The polyphonic synthesiser section has the registers Bass 16 and 8, Lower 8 and 4, Upper 8 and 4 and offers a filter with adjustable cutoff frequency and resonance, which can be modulated by an LFO or an ADSR envelope. There is only one envelope generator for all voices. The polyphonic string section offers a slider for each zone to set the mixing ratio of 8‘ and 4’ strings and a rocker switch to switch the respective zone on/off. In addition to the switchable ensemble effect, there is also an attack control for the strings, which, as with the synthesiser section, only comes into play when playing staccato. There is also an LFO with adjustable rate and delay, an adjustable vibrato, a switch for the ensemble effect (I, II or off), an adjustable autobend function or manual lowering of the pitch by up to an octave and controls for tuning and volume. The RS-505 has the following outputs: stereo, synth bass, trigger and gate as well as the inputs Ext IN, pitch, sustain and VCF for the pedal).
