The instrument

The E-mu Systems Emulator III XP Model 6101, released in the early 1990s, represents a significant advancement in digital sampling technology. As an evolution of the earlier Emulator models, the Emulator III XP offered 16-bit, 44 kHz stereo sampling and more powerful processing capabilities, making it a top choice for professional studios. This model became known for its high-quality sound and extensive editing features.

Due to it’s price – $12,695 for the 4 MB model and $15,195 for the 8 MB model at a time when manufacturers such as Akai, Ensoniq and Casio offered lower-quality samplers at less than $2,000 –, it did not prove a great commercial success but was nonetheless used by artists like Tony Banks of Genesis, Lynda Thomas, 808 State and Depeche Mode to craft complex, layered compositions.
